OLIVE TANNED GERMAN HORESHIDE

european horsehide | tanned in germany

OLIVE TANNING | The process

The leather is tanned 100% with extracts from olive tree leaves, which is particularly sustainable with  over 70% of the tannin in olive trees coming from the leaves. The extract is so pure and natural it can be sipped like tea. The other unique advantage is the olive leaves are waste products from the olive harvest, so there is no need to kill the tree which is common with other vegetable tanning agents that is found within the BARK not the leaves. Traditionally, the olive leaves are burned during the harvest but now are collected in the Mediterranean region for "Olive Tanning" leather.

Like most vegetable tanned leathers, olive tanned leather is dyed in the barrel, without heavy metals. The leather remains aniline without finishing. The hides are lightly buffed by the sanding machine and then ironed and milled again for a few minutes to give them an absolutely unique handfeel and look. Each hide and section can be slightly different, making the product truly unique and authentic, with no two hides being exactly the same.

OLIVE TANNED HORSEHIDE | TANNED IN GERMANY

Olive Tanned Leather uses 100 percent natural wet-green® technology in the tanning process to achieve mineral-free tanning. wet-green® tanning extract is made from fallen olive leaves, much like making tea. These olive leaves are a byproduct of olive production.

Traditionally, these leaves are burned but now are collected in the Mediterranean region which creates a sustainable wage for many adults. The wet-green Olive tanning agent has received a cradle to cradle gold certification and a Material Health Platinum rating.
